A route through Media CFO

Film finance and production banking

Start with three different jobs: financing a production, running the company that makes it, and administering the revenue it earns. The Media CFO archive connects those jobs through interviews with a banker, an entertainment CFO and a collection-account operator.

These interviews were published in 2019. Guest roles, products and market references reflect that period.

Three ways into the archive, each covering a different job. Individual productions use different financing and revenue arrangements.

What is the bank being asked to finance?

In her interview published on 17 July 2019, Lorraine Ruckstuhl distinguishes the debt finance her team provided from the equity or gap funding a producer might still need. A signed commission mattered: the conversation was about financing an identified payment stream, with a lender assessing how it would be repaid.

That distinction gives the interview a practical starting question: is the production waiting for an agreed payment, or does it still need someone to take the commercial risk? Read Lorraine’s explanation of debt financing.

What happens when the payment arrives later?

Lorraine describes how her team adapted to streamer payments spread over a longer period. Her examples include extending the repayment period of a loan and a contract-receivables product that bought payment obligations at a discount, allowing a producer to use the cash for further work. These are her account of products at the time of the interview.

Follow the discussion from payment timing to management, production risk and cash-flow forecasts. The useful connection is between the contract, the timing of expenditure and the timing of receipts.

Who manages the company around the production?

Roland Wieshofer’s first interview, published on 29 May 2019, follows his move from accounting into entertainment and his experience at Lionsgate and an early internet venture. It adds the operating-company perspective: financial leadership also means understanding the business that sits around each project. Part two continues the conversation.

Who administers the money after it is paid?

Robbert Aarts describes a separate role: allocating money received into a collection account according to the parties’ agreement. Continue to the collection account management guide for the distinction between administering paid receipts and pursuing unpaid money.
