Issue 003 · Tuesday, 13 October 2026

Written by a working media CFO, for everyone who has to think like one.

The value of a deal depends on what stays exclusive.

Spotify renews Joe Rogan while keeping the show available beyond its own app. Elsewhere, reported Netflix job cuts, preliminary BBC–Channel 4 talks and a postponed MTG listing put costs and distribution choices in focus. This edition follows the rights, commitments and uncertainties behind those moves, alongside Monday’s completed market close, eight upcoming events, Essay 002 on reading a P&L, and our first week with Anita Elberse’s Blockbusters.

Spotify renews Rogan without bringing back exclusivity

Spotify has renewed its licensing agreement for The Joe Rogan Experience for multiple years, while keeping the show available on other platforms. The company says the podcast has 18 million followers on Spotify and has been its most-followed show since their partnership began in 2020. Its announcement does not disclose the new financial terms. The renewal retains a large established audience within Spotify’s podcast business without making access to that audience exclusive to its own app.

Why it matters: Broad distribution changes the return calculation for a content licence. The useful measures are monetizable listening, advertising yield and retained audience across the permitted outlets; follower totals alone cannot establish whether the commitment earns its cost.

Labor & Costs

Netflix reportedly prepares a 5% workforce reduction

Netflix is reportedly preparing to eliminate about 5% of its workforce, with cuts potentially arriving this week. Mint attributes the plan to Puck and reports that a Netflix spokesperson declined to comment. The company had approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, making the reported percentage equivalent to about 800 roles. The report comes ahead of Netflix’s scheduled 20 October results; it does not establish a completed restructuring or a disclosed savings target.

Why it matters: A headcount percentage is only the start of a cost plan. Severance, implementation timing and the capabilities retained determine when savings become cash. Keep reported reductions separate from management-confirmed guidance when updating forecasts.

Strategy & Operations

BBC and Channel 4 explore a commercial combination

The BBC and Channel 4 have reportedly held preliminary discussions with the UK government about combining some commercial operations. Advanced Television, citing Reuters, says one option would join Channel 4’s advertising business, streaming services and channels including E4 and Film4 with BBC-owned UKTV. Channel 4’s main broadcast channel would remain outside that arrangement. Equal ownership is one possibility under discussion. The report describes an option for reducing costs, with no agreement announced.

Why it matters: The assets inside a joint venture determine where both savings and obligations sit. Shared advertising sales or technology may reduce duplication, but the funding of the excluded public-service channel would need its own explicit mechanism.

Capital Markets

MTG postpones PlaySimple’s potential Indian listing

MTG has postponed the potential IPO of PlaySimple, citing conditions in India’s capital markets. The group says it will reconsider the timing during 2027 and continues to believe a listing could create shareholder value and support the casual-games business’s expansion. In the meantime, MTG plans to support organic growth and acquisitions. The announcement preserves the listing as an option; it supplies neither a revised launch date nor a valuation for a future offering.

Why it matters: A delayed flotation changes the financing timetable even when the operating strategy survives. Growth spending must fit the capital available before any IPO proceeds, while valuation expectations remain conditional on the market reopening on acceptable terms.

Sports & Distribution

Disney+ adds the 2027 Super Bowl to its distribution

Disney+ will livestream Super Bowl LXI on 14 February 2027, alongside ESPN and ABC’s existing presentation. US subscribers will be able to choose the English-language broadcast or ESPN Deportes’ Spanish-language coverage. ESPN says Disney+ will also carry the game in more than 55 international markets, while its linear platforms reach more than 130 countries and territories. Two Monday Night Football games will also reach Disney+ this season, beginning with Dallas at Philadelphia on 26 October.

Why it matters: Adding outlets can extend the value of an existing rights commitment. The financial test is incremental advertising and subscriber value after delivery costs, with duplicated viewers removed before attributing the same audience to several services.

Rights & Litigation

Warner seeks damages over eyewear brands’ social music use

Warner Music companies have sued businesses associated with EssilorLuxottica, alleging that social-media advertisements used music without the necessary licences. The complaint covers 427 recordings and compositions and seeks maximum statutory damages that would exceed $64 million, according to Digital Music News. Ray-Ban and Oakley are among the brands involved. Those amounts are a claim for relief, not an award, and the allegations remain unproven.

Why it matters: Commercial music clearance needs to follow the asset into every paid post and influencer commission. A platform’s music library is not a complete record of a brand’s permissions; retaining licence evidence helps finance assess exposure.

How to read a P&L like a story: characters, plot, and the number that's lying

Every P&L is a story someone chose to tell.

Not a false story, necessarily — but a told one. Somebody decided what to group, what to name, what to smooth, and what to leave in the footnotes.

Anita Elberse

Anita Elberse challenges the instinct to spread a creative budget across many modest bets. Her entertainment-industry cases ask when concentrating production and marketing behind a few projects can be the more defensible strategy. The useful question for a media CFO is what evidence earns a project that concentration.

Key takeaway 1 of 4

Concentration is risk management, not risk appetite.
